Whole Wheat Tortilla Shells (Video)- spare more than 50 ingredients with this recipe

For those looking to trade up for healthier options, this is a biggie!  Taco's are one of our favorites. Over the last few years we transitioned away from hard shell corn taco's to soft shell tortilla wraps. For some reason, that seemed like the "healthier" choice.  I had perused the tortilla wrap options and found a brand with good nutritional analysis and even promoted having as much calcium as a glass of milk.  But check out the ingredient list.

Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Whole Wheat Flour, Vegetable Shortening (Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil and/or Palm Oil), Modified Food Starch, Vital Wheat Gluten, Wheat Protein Isolate (Wheat Gluten, Lactic Acid, Sulfite), Salt, Vitamin Mix (Vitamin A Palmitate, Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Phosphate, dl-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate, Niacinamide, Biotin, Magnesium Sulfate, Selenium Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Sulfate, Molybdenum Amino Acid Chelate, Sodium Ascorbate, Phytonadione, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Cyanocobalamin, Calcium D-Pantothenate, Potassium Iodide, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Chromium Amino Acid Chelate, Cholecalciferol, Maltodextrin), contains 2% or Less of: Leavening (Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate), Fumaric Acid, Distilled Monoglycerides, Enzymes, Wheat Starch, Calcium Carbonate, Antioxidants (Mixed Natural Tocopherols, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Ascorbic Acid), Cellulose Gum, Flaxseed, Glucose Syrup Solids, Algal Oil, Modified Starch, Mannitol, Sodium Ascorbate, High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Glycerol Mono- and Distearate, Sodium Polyphosphate, Natural Flavors, Sunflower Lecithin, Preservatives (Calcium Propionate, Sorbic Acid and/or Citric Acid), Caramel Color, Sodium Metabisulfite.

It takes more than 60 ingredients to pull off this whole wheat tortilla- including bleached whole wheat flour, hydrogenated oil, and caramel color.  Yikes!  It's time to move on.  The exciting news is that making your own Whole Wheat Tortilla's is actually very easy and can be done with only 6 ingredients.

Want to see just how easy it is to make these shells?  Check out this week's episode of Healthy Kids for Busy Families above where we feature Whole Wheat Tortilla Shells.  I find these best when cooked and consumed right away.  I will generally roll out all shells, cook what I need that night, and freeze any uncooked shells for another meal.   Making bread normally petrifies me, but this recipe is so easy that your kids can make it.
